With the flood of new data on genetic factors and mechanisms recently found at the molecular level, it has become extremely important to assess their evolutionary significance, employing population genetical methods. In the past three years, much has been gained by cooperation among Japanese molecular biologists, molecular evolutionists and population geneticists. The main results are: (i) establishment of the neutral theory as a scientific hypothesis, and full recognition of its usefulness in evolutionary thinking, and (ii) clues for the future direction of research in molecular evolutionary biology. This book provides up-dated reviews on these themes.
