For the first time in English translation, notes are given that explain the book's local allusions & concealed autobiographical reminiscences. Students interested in the backgrounds of the novel may read the newspaper account, for the first time in English, of the murder trial upon which some of the novel's events are founded. Other materials on Stendhal's style & on the 1830s background, are also provided. As with all Norton Critical Editions in Continental literature, a number of commentaries are here translated for the first time: Henri Martineau, Jean Prevost, George Poulet, Jean-Pierre Richard, G. Tomasi di Lampedusa, Alain, Paul Valery, Paul Bourget, & Hippolyte Taine. Oother critics are Erich Auerbach, Rene Girard, F.W.J. Hemmings, Jean-Paul Sartre, Andre Gide, Marcel Proust, Friedrich Nietzsche, Jose Ortega y Gasset, & Robert M. Adams * ABOUT THE TRANSLATOR & EDITOR: ROBERT M. ADAMS was professor of English emeritus, University of California at Los Angeles. A Columbia Ph.D., he also taught at Wisconsin, Rutgers, & Cornell. He authored many books, including "Ikon: John Milton and the Modern Critics", "Strains of Discord", "Surface and Symbol", "The Land & Literature of England", & "Shakespeare-The Four Romances". He edited 6 other Norton Critical Editions, including "The Prince" by Machiavelli, "Candide" by Voltaire, & "The Praise of Folly and Other Writings" by Erasmus, the texts of which he also translated. He was a contributing editor of The Norton Anthology of English Literature. * ABOUT NORTON CRITICAL EDITIONS: Each Norton Critical Edition includes an authoritative text, contextual & source materials, & a wide range of interpretations--from contemporary perspectives to the most current critical theory--as well as a bibliography, &, in most cases, a chronology of the author's life & work. * SHIPPING: MNEMOSYNE carefully wraps, labels & custom-packages this fine book for FREE domestic shipment via USPS MEDIA MAIL or USPS PRIORITY MAIL for a below-cost additional fee & via Mandatory USPS PRIORITY INTERNATIONAL AIRMAIL to international destinations at our posted rates.
