The latest edition of what used to be called the Langer encyclopedia, after its first compiler William L. Langer, who in the 1920s rewrote a translated German edition to reflect the concerns of western Europe and the US more closely. Periodization remains the primary organizing tool, but the sections now highlight a period before diving into specific events. The coverage has been extended from the late 1970s, when the previous edition ended, to the end of the century, and expanded to more parts of the world. Annotation c.
