"Human Acid-Base Physiology" is written for pre-clinical medical students and other physiology students of equivalent standard. It is a logical, self-contained text which explains the fundamentals of common clinical disorders of acid-base regulation. The book covers physical chemistry, the essentials of acid-base physiology, the assessment of acid-base status, and finally the field of acid-base physiology is put into perspective in the wider context of the physiology of the whole organism. The book provides a physiological basis from which subsequent clinical studies should form a continuum with Basic Medical Science. The main points developed in the text are gathered in tables, for review and revision purposes. There is a substantial section of self-assessment material, with a range of types of question allowing the testing both of the ability to analyse concepts and of factual information. The text is complemented by original line drawings and key references. A glossary of terms is provided to help readers to understand the jargon of the subject and to check definitions etc. This book should be of interest to physiology courses for pre-clinical medical and dental students; university students in the Faculty of Science studying courses in physiology; students who have studied the course in the past, never come to terms with it and wish to start afresh, perhaps because of a need demanded by a specialism they have taken up, such as intensive care; honours science students following courses which include specialist treatment of acid-base physiology; medical students in their clinical years following courses in clinical physiology; and postgraduate doctors studying for the MRCP and MRCA qualifications.
