"Americans are from Mars and Europeans are from Venus," wrote foreign policy guru Robert Kagan famously in his book Of Paradise and Power, which became an instant New York Times bestseller last year. Taking Kagan one step further, prominent foreign policy specialists - such as Walter Russell Mead, Timothy Garton Ash, and Francis Fukuyama - here provide multiple perspectives on the state of the transatlantic relationship after the war.

Tod Lindberg is editor of Policy Review and a research fellow at the Hoover Institution, Stanford University. He writes a weekly column on politics for the Washington Times, and his writing has also appeared in Commentary, The Wall Street Journal, the Los Angeles Times, and USA Today.Review:
Tod Lindberg, the brilliant editor of Policy Review, has assembled a dazzling collection of provocative essays that broaden and deepen our understanding of the division between the United States and Europe.
. -- Robert Kagan, Senior Associate, Carnegie Endowment for International Peace and author, Of Paradise and Power: America and Europe in the New World Order
This is a superb collection of essays, offering a valuable array of perspectives on the troubled relationship between the United States and Europe. Lindberg and his authors arrive at no consensus on the sources of the transatlantic rift or the prospects for its repair, but they do offer rich and compelling insight into one of the most pressing geopolitical problems of our time.
. -- Charles A. Kupchan, Professor of International Affairs, Georgetown University; Senior Fellow and Director of European Studies, Council on Foreign Relations; and author, The End of the American Era
There is considerable disagreement among the authors of these excellent essays about whether America and Europe continue to have important common interests. But there is no disagreement that the Bush Administration's foreign policy, especially its war in Iraq, has done great damage to trans-Atlantic relations. Indeed, after reading Beyond Paradise and Power, it is hard to see how Humpty Dumpty can be put back together.
. -- John J. Mearsheimer, R. Wendell Harrison Distinguished Service Professor of Political Science, University of Chicago
Since the publication of Robert Kagan's seminal essay on the fundamental differences between American and European attitudes towards power, a fascinating debate has ensued on both sides of the Atlantic. Now that debate has been summed up in this excellent volume, which brings together a clear majority of the smartest commentators on the transatlantic relationship. As post-war partnership evolves slowly into post-Cold War rivalry, this multifaceted collection offers both reactions to and refinements of Kagan's explosive thesis.
. -- Niall Ferguson, Professor of History, Harvard University, and author, Colossus: The Price of America's Empire
Anchored by two outstanding essays--one by Francis Fukuyama and the other by Walter Russell Mead--Beyond Paradise and Power represents the current state of the art on European-American relations. The book offers an unusual breadth of perspectives, with Europeans and Americans arguing not only against each other, but also among themselves--a fascinating debate that makes for fascinated reading.
. -- Josef Joffe, Publisher-Editor, Die Zeit and Research Fellow, Hoover Institution
The 12 voices Mr. Lindberg presents give 12 different answers pointing in even more directions. Mr. Lindberg's aim was to provoke, not to draw fast conclusions, and so Beyond Paradise and Power serves as a sampler of a range of opinion, all of it pro-Atlanticist and pro-cooperation but none of it bland or unimaginative. -- The Washington Times
