Descrizione libro Hardcover. Condizione: Near Fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: Very Good. Philip Mann (Jacket design) (illustratore). First UK Edition. First impression of the first UK edition. Translated from the Japanese by Howard Hibbett. The book was first published in English by Alfred A. Knopf, New York in 1975, and was originally published in Japanese in 1965 under the title "Utsukushisa to kanashimi to". Dustwrapper designed by Philip Mann. ***Near fine in cream textured cloth-covered boards with gilt titles to the spine and gilt Japanese characters to the front board. The gilt is still fairly bright but faded in places. Head and tail of spine slightly creased and rubbed. The lower corner of the back board is slightly creased. Boards clean and unmarked. Top edge of page block stained green by the publisher - still clean and bright. Edges of page block clean without any foxing. Fore-edge of page block untrimmed [rough-cut as the binding is actually American - taken from the American sheets]. Internally also near fine with no inscriptions. Interior pages are clean with no foxing - paper stock clean and unmarked. No creases or tears. Spine tight. ***In a very good colour-illustrated dustwrapper that has been corner price-clipped. Edges of dustwrapper just slightly creased and rubbed, mainly at the head and tail of the spine. No chips or tears, but please note there is a small ink stain affecting the lower spine and back panel of the dustwrapper. (Please see scans) ***218mm x 148mm. 206 pages plus Notes on the Author, Translator and the Type at the back of the book. ***'This haunting story, tinged with eroticism and menace, is the last novel Kawabata completed before his death in 1972.' (Quote taken from the front flap of the dustwrapper) ***'"Beauty and Sadness" is a 1961-63 novel by Japanese author Yasunari Kawabata. Opening on the train to Kyoto, the narrative, in characteristic Kawabata fashion, subtly brings up issues of tradition and modernity as it explores writer Oki Toshio's reunion with a young lover from his past, Otoko Ueno, who is now a famous artist and recluse. Ueno is now living with her protégée and a jealous lesbian lover, Keiko Sakami, and the unfolding relationships between Oki, Otoko, and Keiko form the plot of the novel. Keiko states several times that she will avenge Otoko for Oki's abandonment, and the story coalesces into a climactic ending.' (Wiki) ***First impression of the first UK edition, complete in its original dustwrapper. Kawabata won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1968, the first Japanese author to receive the award. Yasunari Kawabata's first UK editions are quite uncommon. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc. Codice articolo 8346x
