In a quintet of heartwarming Christmas stories whose settings range from the modern-day American West to Regency England, angelic interference in the lives of mortal lovers is the order of the day, and the results are delightful. Angels apparently come in all shapes and sizes from red-headed, freckle-faced boys and wooden cowboys to kindly grandmothers and meddlesome Irish fathers all trying their hands at heavenly romantic intervention. Carole Nelson Douglas's "Catch a Falling Star" with its rake-turned-rock-star dark angel is one of the more unusual stories, and Patricia Rice's "Tin Angel" is at once funny and poignant. Although style and approach vary among the stories, these well-crafted tales all have something to recommend them. One of the best and most memorable collections of the season.
