Hardcover. Condizione: Near Fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: Near Fine. 1st Edition. First Edition (Number Line to 1). This is a special book in two regards. Once listed, it will be the Only signed copy for sale on the Internet. And it is inscribed to the author, biographer and historian William Manchester. I purchased the book some years ago in Middletown, Connecticut where he had resided. The inscription reads: 'To Wm Manchester, with admiration at all he has accomplished in war and peace over the many years since we first met. Theodore Ridz.' Manchester was the 'author of 18 books which have been translated into over 20 languages.' He was awarded the National Humanities Medal and the Abraham Lincoln Literary Award, among many other awards. His best-selling book, The Death of a President, is a detailed account of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. 'Theodore Lidz was an American psychiatrist best known for his articles and books on the causes of schizophrenia and on psychotherapy with patients with schizophrenia. An advocate of research into environmental causes of mental illness, Lidz was a notable critic of what he saw as a disproportionate focus on biological psychiatry. Lidz was a Sterling Professor of Psychiatry at Yale University. In his lifetime, he did a great amount of research on interpersonal causes of schizophrenia.' The light blue covers are in excellent condition. They are very clean. The black lettering on the spine is very bright. The edges and corners are free of any wear. The spine ends have just a little bit of crinkling. The page edges are perfectly clean. The top page edge is a pinkish red. The book is solidly bound. The pages are nicely tight throughout. They are are also in exceptional condition. In scrolling through, I didn't find any soiling at all. I didn't see any creasing. There are no markings. No attachments. And with the exception of the author's signed inscription, no one has written their name or anything else anywhere in the book. You can see the dust jacket in the first few photos. It looks quite clean. It does have some toning off its edges and clearly on the spine. I don't see any tears anywhere. The flaps are in excellent condition. The jacket is NOT price-clipped, not clipped at all. I've had it in a fitted protective cover for as long as I've owned the book. From the dust jacket: 'Revitalizing a once-grand tradition in the psychoanalytic literature of our time, the distinguished psychotherapist Dr. Theodore Lidz has completed a seminal work which explores the themes of one of the world's greatest artistic masterpieces-- in order both to understand the work better and then to use that understanding to revise and advance some central concepts of psychoanalytic psychology. Hamlet's Enemy is, to begin with, perhaps the most comprehensive and authoritative study of the theme of madness in Hamlet yet written. It fully and sensitively explicates the many fundamental issues of existence with which the play deals: how primal sin corrupts; how corruption disillusions; how disillusion breeds preoccupation with death and destroys Eros; and how avengers lose their souls in the inexorable conflict and turmoil that afflicts them. Then, combining his brilliant analysis of Hamlet's structure and themes with his own experience of more than thirty years as one of America's most original and influential teachers and psychiatrists, Dr. Lidz considers the implications of his reading of Hamlet for psychoanalytic psychology today. In particular he deals with: the reformation of the classic concepts of the Oedipus complex in terms of family dynamics; the re-examination of the relationship between mourning and melancholia; and the impact of parental relationships upon children, even when the children are adults. Hamlet's Enemy is at once an enlightening work of criticism and an important contribution to contemporary psychodynamic thought.'. Inscribed by Author(s). Codice articolo 003546
