Financial Institutions, Markets, and Money provides a balanced introduction to the operation, mechanics, and structure of the U.S. financial system emphasizing its institutions, markets, and financial instruments. The authors stress the mastery of fundamental material, placing an emphasis on how things really work in a market context. The book has balanced coverage of the U.S. financial system with a strong emphasis on both institutions and markets. Special attention is given to the Federal Reserve System and its conduct of monetary policy. The authors also stress the risks that the financial institutions face (i.e. interest rate risk, credit risk, liquidity risk, foreign exchange risk) and how they can manage those risks in financial markets. Furthermore, the authors recognize the impact that technology and globalization have on the operations and structure of the financial system. The book is also written with a strong historical perspective with attention given to the historical development of financial institutions and markets with discussion of important historical events.

Dr. David S. Kidwell is Professor of Finance and DeanEmeritus at the Curtis L. Carlson School of Management at theUniversity o Minnesota. He holds an undergraduate degree inmechanical engineering from California State University at SanDiego, an MBA from California Sate University at San Francisco, anda PhD in finance from the University o Oregon.

Before joining the University of Minnesota, Dr. Kidwell was Deanof the School of Business Administration at the University ofConnecticut. Prior to joining the University of Connecticut, heheld endowed chairs in banking and finance at Tulane University,the University of Tennessee, and Texas tech University. He was alsoon the faculty at the Krannert Graduate School of Management,Purdue University, where he was twice voted the outstandingundergraduate teacher of the year. Dr. Kidwell has publishedresearch in the leading journals, including Journals of Finance,Journal of Financial Economics, Journal of Financial andQuantitative Analysis, Financial Management, and Journal of Money,Credit, and Banking.

Dr. Kidwell has been a management consultant for Coopers &Lybrand and a sales engineer for Bethlehem Steel Corporation. He isan expert on the U.S. financial system and is the author of morethan 80 articles dealing with the U.S. financial system and capitalmarkets. Dr. Kidwell has participated in a number of researchgrants funded by the National Science Foundation to study theefficiency of U.S. capital markets, and to study the impact ofgovernment regulation upon the delivery of consumer financialservices.

Dr. Kidwell currently serves on the Board of the Schwan FoodCompany. He is the past Secretary–Treasurer of the Board ofDirectors of AACSB, the International Association for ManagementEducation. he is a past member of the Boards of the MinnesotaCouncil for Quality, the Stonier Graduate School of Banking, andthe Minnesota Center for Corporate responsibility. he has alsoserved as an Examiner for the 1995 Malcolm Baldrige NationalQuality Award, on the Board of Directors of the Juran Center forLeadership in Quality and on the Board of the Minnesota LifeInsurance Company.

Dr. David W. Blackwell is the James W. Aston/RepublicBank Professor of Finance and Associate Dean for Graduate Programsat Texas A&M, Dr. Blackwell worked several years as aconsultant with PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP and KPMG LLP. before hisstint in the Big 4, Dr. Blackwell served on the Faculties of theUniversity of Georgia, the University of Houston, and EmoryUniversity. He was also a visiting professor at the University ofRochester.

Dr. Blackwell′s areas of expertise include corporate finance,commercial bank management, and executive compensation. Hispublications have appeared in the leading scholarly journals offinance and accounting such as Journal of Finance, Journal ofFinancial Economics, Journal of Financial Quantitative Analysis,Financial Management, Journal of Financial Research, Journal ofAccounting research, and Journal of Accounting and Economics.

While in the Big 4, Dr. Blackwell consulted on a brad range oflitigation matters including securities, breach of contract, andintellectual property infringement cases. He also consulted onmatters involving securities and business valuation, corporategovernance, and executive compensation.

In addition, Dr. Blackwell has delivered executive educationseminars in corporate finance and management of financialinstitutions for IBM, Kaiser Permanente, Chemical bank, SouthwireCompany, Georgia Bankers Association, Warsaw Institute of Banking,Bratislava Institute of Banking, and the people′s Construction bankof China (PRC).

Dr. Blackwell earned his PhD in Finance in 1986 and his BS inEconomics in 1981, both from the University of Tennessee,Knoxville. He is a past president of the Southern FianceAssociation, and a former Associate Editor of the Journal ofFinancial Research.

Dr. David A. Whidbee is an Associate Professor of Financeand the Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs and Research in theCollege of Business at Washington State University. He received hisPhD in Finance from the University of Georgia and his MVA and BS inFinance from Auburn University. After receiving his MBA, he workedas a financial analyst in the Chief Economist′s Office at theFederal Home Loan Bank Board and, subsequently, the Office ofThrift Supervision (OTS). While on the staff at these regulatoryagencies, he performed research and analysis on the thrift industryand prepared congressional testimony concerning the problems theindustry faced in the late 1980s.

In 1990, Dr. Whidbee left the OTS to begin the PhD program inFinance at the University of Georgia, where he wrote hisdissertation on corporate governance in the banking industry andbegan teaching financial markets and institutions. His otherteaching interests are in the areas of commercial banking,financial institutions, and corporate finance. Upon completing thePhD program, he joined the faculty at California State University,Sacramento, where her taught commercial banking and financialmarkets and institutions. In 1997, he left Cal State Sacramento tojoin the faculty at Washington State University, where he continuesto teach commercial banking and financial markets andinstitutions.

Dr. Whidbee′s research interests are in the areas of financialinstitutions and corporate governance. His work has been publishedin several outlets, including the Journal of Business, Journal ofAccounting and Economics, Journal of Banking and Financial ServicesResearch. In addition, he has presented his research at numerousacademic and regulatory conferences.

Dr. Richard L. Peterson is Professor of Finance Emeritusat Texas Tech University. Dr. Peterson was the "High ScholarshipGraduate in Economics" from Iowa State University in 1962, andreceived a PhD in Economics from the University of Michigan in1966. Subsequently, he taught economics tat Southern MethodistUniversity, was a financial economist on the staff of the Board ofGovernors of the Federal Reserve System, and served as theAssociate Director of Purdue University′s Credit research Centerbefore Joining Texas Tech University in 1982 as a Professor ofFinance and holder of the I. Wylie and Elizabeth Briscoe Chair ofBank Management. He has taught at numerous schools in the UnitedStates and abroad for domestic and international financialinstitution executives  and has consulted for Dun &Bradstreet, Chemical Bank, Citicorp, and the National SecondMortgage Association. He has served as an expert witness for lawfirms representing the FDIC in savings and loan litigation, in NewYork Stock Exchange arbitration hearings, and in other matters.

Dr. Peterson has also written a book title The REAL SocialSecurity Problem and has published numerous papers. His papers haveappeared in the Journal of Money, Credit, and Banking; Journal ofFinance; Journal of Financial and Quantitative Analysis; Journal ofFinancial Research; Journal of Financial Services Research; Journalof Futures Markets; Bell Journal of Economics; Quarterly Journal ofEconomics; Journal of Macroeconomics; American Banker; Banker′sMagazine; and numerous other publications. he also has presentedpapers at numerous academic meetings and at conferences sponsoredby Federal Reserve Banks and Federal Home Loan Banks and heparticipated in the American Assembly′s s comprehensive study ofthe U.S. financial system and its regulation.

He received Texas Tech′s President′s excellence in TeachingAward in 1989 and its Academic Achievement Award in 1992. Dr.Peterson remains active in practical fiance as a writer of tractson financial and economics policy issues and as a n investor inreal estate, stocks, bonds, futures, and options.
