JOHN C. BAILAR III, MD, PhD, is Scholar in Residence atthe National Academy of Sciences and Professor Emeritus at theUniversity of Chicago. He served as statistical consultant for theNew England Journal of Medicine for more than ten years andwas chairman of the board of the National Institute of StatisticalSciences. Dr. Bailar has published numerous papers in the areas ofepidemiology and scientific communications.

DAVID C. HOAGLIN, PhD, is Principal Statistician at AbtBio-Pharma Solutions, Inc., a global provider of integratedclinical, health economic, and commercialization solutions for thepharmaceutical, biotech, and medical device and diagnosticsindustries. In thirty years with Abt Associates Inc., he worked onstudies and experiments in public health, income security, healthservices, housing, education, and law and justice. He has heldfaculty and research positions in statistics at Harvard Universityand also served for five years as core biostatistician for theHarvard Anesthesia Research Center. Dr. Hoaglin has publishedpapers in exploratory data analysis, outliers, meta-analysis,surgery, anesthsesia, vaccination, and multiple sclerosis.
