Darren Cambridge is assistant professor of Internet Studies and Information Literacy and affiliated faculty in the Higher Education Program at George Mason University. Previously, he was a director at the American Association for Higher Education, a fellow with the EDUCAUSE National Learning Infrastructure Initiative, and assistant director of the Computer Writing and Research Lab at the University of Texas at Austin.
Lifelong learning is an ongoing process of developing knowledge, skills, and strategies; putting capabilities and self-understandinginto action; and, thereby, establishing an identity. A major goalof education is to enable individuals to have agency in the worldthrough their evolving understanding of themselves, theircapabilities, and their connections to others. In this book, DarrenCambridge shows how electronic portfolios provide a means forcolleges and universities to help both adult and traditionalcollege-age students at all levels articulate their identities in amanner that reflects their own values and is coherent over time, equipping these students to put that self-understanding to work intheir communities and the world.
The book draws on many exemplary practices for developingeportfolios and suggests resources for bridging the gap betweencurrent practice and the extraordinary potential of eportfolios. The author presents the foundations of an educational vision thatis distinctly supported by eportfolio use, drawing on work inphilosophy, sociology, higher and adult education, and elearningresearch.
Showing how eportfolios can be used in programmatic andinstitutional assessment, the book emphasizes the importance oftaking advantage of the distinctive characteristics of eportfolios, which combine reflection with diverse evidence, as opposed to morelimited forms of assessment that consider individual samples ofwork in isolation from their contexts. Cambridge suggests futuredirections for higher education institutions committed tointegrating curriculum, assessment, and technology.
The author also discusses how eportfolios are being used byindividuals, companies, government agencies, and professionalbodies for developing individual and collective knowledge and formanaging transitions between levels of education, education and theworkplace, and places of employment.
As the eportfolio movement continues to gain strength, bothwithin and beyond higher education, Eportfolios for LifelongLearning and Assessment will prove to be an invaluableresource.
