9780470847640: The Board Game: A Director's Companion for Winning in Business

A Director's Bible for Winning in Business
:Peter Waine
The corporate board game is complex and fraught with dangers for the unwary. In this anecdotal but practical handbook for life at the top of the corporate tree, Peter Waine distils his many years of experience into a biting expose of how company decisions are really made and executed. In vivid detail he shows how boards work in practice, and the differences between the boards of large and small companies. He also examines how corporate strategies evolve through boom and bust years, and how such changes can affect the company's relationship with the Square Mile. And he profiles the typical board and its interaction - the various personnel, the often tense relationship between CEO and Chairman, and the role of the non-executive director (NED).
* An expose of board life which shows that the reality can be stranger than fiction - set to become the book for company directors to be seen with
* The first stand-alone CBI title for senior managers - explores a number of hot topics identified by the CBI including corporate governance, business ethics and corporate social responsibility
* Pulls together a wealth of insight and experience to offer a clear view of how corporate boards operate and point the way to a winning formula in the boardroom
Peter Waine is a former CBI Director and the author of Takeover (0470 84330 6, 5000 copies sold) - he is the co-founder of Hanson Green, a leading non-executive director and chairman placement firm.
Readership: Senior Managers and CEOs across all functions; aspiring senior managers.

From the Back Cover:

The corporate board game is complex and fraught with dangers for the unwary. In this practical look at life at the top of the organisational tree, Peter Waine distils his many years experience and exclusive access to leading board directors into a biting exposé of how company decisions are really made and executed. The Board Game offers an unprecedented close-up of why companies behave the way they do, where they go wrong, and what can be done to put things right. In particular, the critical and often fraught relationship between CEO and Chairman is examined, along with the role of non-executive directors, a companys relationship with the City, international trading, corporate characters and cultures, psychology and emotions, and strategies through a boom and bust cycle.

The Board Game is the book all company leaders, senior and aspiring executives, and captains of industry have been waiting for. It will enable you to see the wood for the trees in corporate life and its conclusions will point the way to a winning formula in the boardroom.

About the Author:

Peter Waine has worked for both manufacturing companies and professional firms and has main board experience both as an executive and non-executive director of companies with turnover of up to £1 billion. He is chairman of both a Remuneration and Audit Committee. A former CBI director, he is co-founder of Hanson Green, the leading company in the field of non-executive appointments, and co-author of both The Independent Board Director, the acknowledged management book on non-executive directors, and Takeover, the acclaimed business novel, translated into five foreign languages. He is a former trustee of the Royal Opera House, a member of the International Cricket Council and a former member of the Council of the European Business School, the Institute of Management, and former chairman of the Tree Council. He is currently Chairman of Brogdale Horticultural Trust, which is the largest collection of soft fruits in the world.
