Khadija al-Salami's father was lost to her through shell shock, leaving the little girl to fend for herself and her family in a man's world. Her first battles were with her grandfather, who wished to separate her from her mother, and also with her uncle, who married her to a friend against her will at the age of 11. After a failed suicide attempt, Khadija repented and saw that education and hard work could help her escape the trauma of her early life. She studied hard and took a job at the local television station earning enough money to finance her education.
