Thoroughly restructured and updated with new findings and new features

The Second Edition of this internationally acclaimed text presents the latest developments in atmospheric science. It continues to be the premier text for both a rigorous and a complete treatment of the chemistry of the atmosphere, covering such pivotal topics as:
* Chemistry of the stratosphere and troposphere
* Formation, growth, dynamics, and properties of aerosols
* Meteorology of air pollution
* Transport, diffusion, and removal of species in the atmosphere
* Formation and chemistry of clouds
* Interaction of atmospheric chemistry and climate
* Radiative and climatic effects of gases and particles
* Formulation of mathematical chemical/transport models of the atmosphere

All chapters develop results based on fundamental principles, enabling the reader to build a solid understanding of the science underlying atmospheric processes. Among the new material are three new chapters: Atmospheric Radiation and Photochemistry, General Circulation of the Atmosphere, and Global Cycles. In addition, the chapters Stratospheric Chemistry, Tropospheric Chemistry, and Organic Atmospheric Aerosols have been rewritten to reflect the latest findings.

Readers familiar with the First Edition will discover a text with new structures and new features that greatly aid learning. Many examples are set off in the text to help readers work through the application of concepts. Advanced material has been moved to appendices. Finally, many new problems, coded by degree of difficulty, have been added. A solutions manual is available.

Thoroughly updated and restructured, the Second Edition of Atmospheric Chemistry and Physics is an ideal textbook for upper-level undergraduate and graduate students, as well as a reference for researchers in environmental engineering, meteorology, chemistry, and the atmospheric sciences.

L'autore:
JOHN H. SEINFELD is Louis E. Nohl Professor and Chairman of the Division of Engineering and Applied Science at the California Institute of Technology, where he has been a faculty member since 1967. Widely known for his work in atmospheric science, Dr. Seinfeld has received numerous awards for his research. He is a member of the National Academy of Engineering and a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

SPYROS N. PANDIS is a member of the faculty of Carnegie Mellon University in the departments of chemical engineering and engineering and public policy. Dr. Pandis received his PhD at the California Institute of Technology in 1990. His research interests are in atmospheric aerosols, aerosol-cloud interactions, cloud chemistry, and global climate.
Dalla quarta di copertina:
This brand–new successor to John H. Seinfeld′s popular Atmospheric Chemistry and Physics of Air Pollution is the most comprehensive single source available on atmospheric chemistry, aerosols, and atmospheric models.

Retaining much of the core content of the original, this updated version has been substantially revised to reflect the many recent advances made in understanding the complex dynamics of the atmosphere. New chapters cover areas such as cloud physics, organic aerosols, nucleation, and climate, in addition to stratospheric chemistry, wet deposition and acid rain, chemical transport models, and more.

Beginning with a detailed examination of atmospheric composition, this book offers a rigorous treatment of the chemistry of the stratosphere and troposphere; the chemistry of the atmospheric aqueous phase; the transport, diffusion, and removal of species in the atmosphere; the formation, growth, dynamics, and properties of aerosols; the meteorology of air pollution; cloud microphysics; and mathematical chemical/transport modeling. It explores the interaction of atmospheric chemistry and climate, as well as the radiative and climatic effects of gases and particles.

Each topic is developed from first principles, providing a solid grounding in the underlying science of atmospheric processes that readers can easily extend and apply to their own work. Worked–out examples and appendices facilitate quick and thorough understanding of the material presented in the text. Problems are graded according to degree of difficulty, from straightforward use of concepts for the novice to advanced applications for those with more experience.

Unmatched in breadth and depth, this peerless reference is indispensable reading for students and professionals at the cutting edge of atmospheric science.

The only single–source reference available on atmospheric chemistry, aerosols, and atmospheric models

This fully revised and expanded version of John H. Seinfeld′s successful Atmospheric Chemistry and Physics of Air Pollution provides a rigorous, comprehensive treatment of the chemistry of the atmosphere. With new chapters on such important topics as cloud physics, nucleation, and wet deposition, this book offers a truly up–to–date examination of atmospheric chemistry today, including:
∗ Chemistry of the stratosphere and troposphere
∗ Formation, growth, dynamics, thermodynamics, and properties of aerosols
∗ Meteorology of air pollution
∗ Transport, diffusion, and removal of species in the atmosphere
∗ Formation and chemistry of clouds
∗ Interaction of atmospheric chemistry and climate
∗ Radiative and climatic effects of gases and particles
∗ Formulation of mathematical chemical/transport models of the atmosphere.

Complete with solved examples, problems graded according to difficulty, and hundreds of illustrations, this state–of–the art reference is an ideal resource for both students and professionals in all areas of engineering as well as atmospheric science.
