The naevus, or birthmark, is a physical defect which is compounded by a psychological burden on the sufferer, and has presented a major problem to the plastic and reconstructive surgeon and dermatologist for many years. The development of the medical laser in the early 1960s gave the clinician a new tool with which to treat these disturbing and distressing skin lesions.
