The naevus, or birthmark, is a physical defect which is compounded by a psychological burden on the sufferer, and has presented a major problem to the plastic and reconstructive surgeon and dermatologist for many years. The development of the medical laser in the early 1960s gave the clinician a new tool with which to treat these disturbing and distressing skin lesions. Dr Toshio Ohshiro, a pioneer of the application of the laser in dermatology and plastic surgery, has drawn on his years of experience in treating over 19000 cases of naevi with surgical laser and other methodologies, together with a further 10000 cases in which he has used laser therapy either on its own or with laser surgery, to put together a comprehensive introductory volume to this growing clinical application of the laser. The book first reviews the history and clinical basics of naevi, in both treatment- and aetiology-related groups; the anatomy and physiology of skin and its appendages; the basic physics of light and lasers; the laser/tissue interaction on which laser treatment for naevi depends; wound healing; wound care; and the doctor/patient relationship. The author then discusses his Total Treatment Concept by which all the above facets are combined in a comfortable and safe clinical environment, to effect an individualized treatment regimen on a patient-by-patient basis, leading to successful physical and psychological care of the naevus patient as shown in the final full colour section. Designed primarily to provide a comprehensive basic grounding in dermatology and plastic surgery, the book, which is well-illustrated with drawings, black and white and colour photographs, will appeal to a large range of readers including medical professionals and the medical student.
