Descrizione libro Soft Covers. Condizione: VG. No Jacket. Photos, Document Reproductions, Drawings, Newspaper Clippings, Diagram, (illustratore). 1st. Professor Alexander William Bickerton arrived in NZ in 1876 to assist with the establishement of the Canterbury College (which became the University) and was appointed the first professor at the college. In the early 1880s the Professor purchased a large property in sandhills that later became the Christchurch suburb of Wainoni and began developing what became his Wainoni Park. Initially the Park was a social point for the university students. A large garden setting was established to become the location of fireworks displays, dances and theatrical perfrormances. According to Tim Baker's introduction the Park was the location of NZ's second commune and one of the country's first sanatoria. In later years it developed as Christchurch's "famous pleasure park and gardens" which from 1903 ro 1914 attracted "hundreds of thousands of people from all over the world,." The Park had its own zoo, provided camping space for groups ranging for religiious organisations, pioneer settler reunions to Boy Scout gatherings. On the Park the Bickerton family established a fireworks factory, a lake where mock battles with model warships were staged and a studio for artists. Scientific, astronomical and other learned lectures or studies took place alongside theatrical presentations and the fireworks displays,The sanatorium in the sand hills closed when a Government establishement was built, hot air bolloons were demonstrated while galas and fairs were held there. Prodessor Bicketon's academic skill should not be overlooked --- Sir Ernest Rutherford (first scientist to split the atom) was one of his students and as the author comments " "He and the Prof were more than just teacher and student,The Prof was Rutherford's friend, colleague and mentor.". When Professor Bickerton died in London in 1929, the halcyon days of the Pleasure Park were well over. Largely forgotten by the mid-1950s this story of Wainoni Park, and its Professor, has recorded it for posterity in Tim Baker's fine study. First edition of 2004, published in Christchirch by the author. This is an ex-library copy, but the only indication of this is a library codeing stamp lower front corner page one.
