Grade 4-6-- Lizzie looks forward to her summers at Bloodroot, her grandmother's New England country home, but this year conflicts are rife against the idyllic background. There are confrontations between Lizzie and Grama Ax and some local teenagers over the swimming hole; between Lizzie and a boy who joyfully slaughters frogs; and between the girl and her mother over her back-to-nature lifestyle at Bloodroot. However, the major confrontation involves an outside corporation's plans to build condominiums in the town. Grama Ax and her friends are firmly opposed to the project, and Lizzie is quickly involved in their meetings, petitions, and protests. Because Lizzie narrates the story, it reads much like letters to a friend. The short sentences and simple dialogue are authentically childlike but make for a choppy rather than flowing narrative. While many characters come and go, Lizzie and Grama Ax are the only ones developed enough for readers to care about and follow. Also, the problems they face in the last chapter are so like the ones in the first that it is possible to finish the book feeling that nothing has happened. In the end, the land and the relationships endure, but young readers may not find that reason enough to enjoy this book. The art consists of a small black-and-white wildflower sketched at the beginning of each chapter, plus seven other realistic but small drawings scattered throughout. --Susan L.
