The Arion Press "Moby-Dick, " published in 1979 in a limited edition of 250 copies, has been hailed as a modern masterpiece of bookmaking. It was hand set under the supervision of one of America's finest book designers and printers. The initial letters that begin each chapter were designed especially for this book and christened "Leviathan." The illustrations, of places, creatures, objects or tools, and processes connected with nineteenth-century whaling, are original boxwood engravings by Massachusetts artist Barry Moser. The text of "Moby-Dick" used in this edition is based on that used in the critical edition of Melville's works published by the Northwestern University Press and the Newberry Library. Now this magnificently typeset and illustrated edition of the great American novel is available for all lovers of beautiful books. This luxurious edition of "Moby Dick" is limited to 750 numbered copies. It is bound in cloth and slipcased in a cloth-covered box. The text is printed in two colors throughout on a 75-pound beautifully textured paper.

Descrizione libro University of California Press, Berkeley, 1981. Hard cover. Moser, Barry (illustratore). Deluxe. Sewn binding. Cloth over boards. 600 p. Contains: Illustrations. Audience: General/trade. First Printing of the Deluxe University of California Press edition, Limited to 750 copies. This edition is a facsimile reproduction of the edition designed by Andrew Hoyem, printed and published by the Arion Press in 1979. For that edition the type was handset Goudy Modern. The illustrations were drawn and engraved by Barry Moser. Those pages were photographed for reproduction in the University of California Press edition with the printing being done at The Kingsport Press; The present printing is the result of consultation between Hoyem and the University of California Press, which has also had a tradition of significant printing. In cooperation, the two presses have devised a page with handsome dimensions, a page that, though smaller than the original, is still generous and suitable to the scope of the text. The text is the first to use the careful editorial work of three leading scholars of Melville's writings-Harrison Hayford, Hershel Parker, and G. Thomas Tanselle-prepared for publication as part of the fifteen-volume definitive edition issued under the auspices of the Northwestern University Press and The Newberry Library. Fine in fine slipcase. Blue cloth with titling stamped in silver on spine, in original blue cloth slipcase. Codice libro della libreria Alibris.0005212
