Mr Dobb believes that these discussions constituted a crucial turning-point in the history of economics: an estimate not unconnected with his reinterpretation of nineteenth-century economic thought as consisting of two streams or traditions commonly confused (e.g. by Marshall) under the generic title of' the classical tradition' against which Jevons so strongly reacted. The book begins with an extremely interesting and thoughtful chapter in which the general problem of 'ideology' in economics is surveyed in a masterly fashion. A number of economists have been actively concerned with this question in recent years, and Mr Dobb believes that the ideological elements continuing in economic theory were in effect the chief casualties of the criticism of the last decade. The body of the book provides a new history of economic thought in which special emphasis is placed on those parts of the work of earlier thinkers which anticipated the ideas of the critics of the 1960s, and on the doctrines which these critics have been mainly concerned to oppose. Many new insights are gained from Mr Dobb's approach, and his account as a whole has a startling freshness and novelty.
