Descrizione libro Hardcover. Condizione: Used - Very Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Very Good. The first book ever dedicated to the brothers, Giambattista and Lorenzo Bregno, and the result of years of study, this monograph provides a definitive treatment of the lives and works of the leading sculptors of the Venetian High Renaissance. On the basis of all known, as well as newly-discovered documents, the author reconstructs the artists' biographies. First hand examination of secure works at Crema, Treviso, Cesena, Padua, and Venice furnishes stylistic criteria that permit Schulz to attribute to the sculptors a score of new works, including many never before published. Their sources, their relation to comparable Venetian works, and the development of the Bregnos' distinctive styles are thoroughly explored. Introductory and concluding chapters set the Bregnos' lives and works within the social, historical, and economic context of early Cinquecento Venice; the Bregnos' sculpture is viewed against the artistic background of contemporary painting and sculpture and the revival of antique art. An analysis of the Bregnos' patronage proves them to have been the favourite sculptors of the Venetian patriciate and recipients of the major sculptural commissions of their time. The first book ever dedicated to the brothers Giambattista and Lorenzo Bregno, this work provides a definitive treatment of the lives and works of the leading sculptors of the Venetian High Renaissance. Very nice clean, tight copy free of any marks. Wrapped in complimentary Brodart dust jacket protector. Codice articolo 20110320142621

Including transcriptions of all pertinent documents, a catalogue of accepted and rejected attributions, and over 340 illustrations, including 250 superlative photographs of the Bregnos' entire oeuvre, Giambattista and Lorenzo Bregno is the definitive work on its subject and an invaluable contribution to Venetian Renaissance studies. Giambattista and Lorenzo Bregno is the first book dedicated to the life and work of the two brothers who were seminal to the development of a quintessentially Venetian idiom in sculpture during the Renaissance. Through a meticulous examination of all extant documents, as well as all works that have been traditionally attributed to these artists, Anne Markham Schulz reconstructs their biographies and defines the stylistic criteria according to which she assigns their authorship to a number of works published here for the first time. In her search for sources for the Bregno brothers' work, Schulz outlines the development of their individual styles and explores the relationship of their sculpture to comparable Venetian works, including contemporary painting. Moreover, her study sets their work against the context of Venice in the late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries, demonstrating the impact of unique social and economic circumstances on their careers. Her analysis of the Bregnos' patronage demonstrates that the artists, as the favored sculptors of the Venetian patriciate, received the most important sculptural commissions of their time. Size: 4to.
