This pioneering and award-winning study provides the world with the first coherent narrative of Eastern European contributions to the modern art movement. Analyzing an enormous range of works, from art centers such as Prague, Warsaw and Budapest, (many published here for the first time), S.A. Mansbach shows that any understanding of Modernism is essentially incomplete without the full consideration of vital Eastern European creative output. He argues that Cubism, Expressionism and Constructivism, along with other great modernist styles, were merged with deeply rooted, Eastern European visual traditions. The art that emerged was vital modernist art that expressed the most pressing concerns of the day, political as well as aesthetic. Mansbach examines the critical reaction of the contemporary artistic culture and political state. A major groundbreaking interpretation of Modernism, Modern Art in Eastern Europe completes any full assessment of twentieth-century art, as well as its history. Modern Art in Eastern Europe is the recipient of the 1997 C.I.N.O.A. Prize, awarded by La Confédération Internationale de Négociants en Oeuvres d'Art. The prize is awarded to defray the costs of publication in order to encourage publishers to produce maunscripts of particular merit and the works of younger art historians.

Book Description:

In this award-winning and groundbreaking study, S. A. Mansbach provides us with the first coherent narrative of the modern art movements of Eastern European. Analyzing a vast range of works, many published here for the first time, the author argues that our understanding of modernism is incomplete without consideration of this material. A revisionist interpretation of modernism, The Emergence of Modern Art in Eastern Europe provides a much-needed reassessment of the art of this century, as well as its historiography.

Review:

"Well-written and thoroughly documented, it opens up an entirely new field of inquiry....Recommended for any library with a serious interest in modern art." Library Journal

"Here's a kind of book that comes along only a few times in a century. Nearly everything in it is unfamiliar to Western readers. Many of the illustrations are receiving their first publication. The author's command of the material is both brilliant and comprehensive. The text supersedes that of earlier, more specialized English-language publications. And, if taken seriously, the achievements outlined should lead to changes in how we view the origins and development of the modern movement. A whole new world awaits the reader's discovery." Chicago Tribune

"...the encyclopedic narrative in Modern Art in Eastern Europe offers an illuminating investigation of a blind spot in our knowledge of modern art." Marek Bartelik, Art & Antiques

"An authoritative source, highly recommended. Undergradautes through professionals." Choice

"Its illustrations, many in color, or dozens of unknown and inaccessible artworks, furnish a rich visual resource. This study will surely be widely used as a teaching text and as an important reference tool....[Mansbach's] investigation greatly enriches and internationalizes our knowledge of the art of eastern Europe....Mansbach provides an English-speaking audience with an important and accessible resource." Slavic Review
