9780521806985: Introduction to Structural Dynamics and Aeroelasticity (Cambridge Aerospace Series)

Here is an introduction to structural dynamics and aeroelasticity, with an emphasis on conventional aircraft. The primary areas considered are structural dynamics, static aeroelasticity and dynamic aeroelasticity. Aeroelastic phenomena discussed include divergence, aileron reversal, airload redistribution, unsteady aerodynamics, flutter and elastic tailoring. Over one hundred illustrations and tables help clarify the text, while more than fifty problems enhance student learning.

Book Description:

This text provides an introduction to structural dynamics and aeroelasticity, with an emphasis on conventional aircraft. The primary areas considered are structural dynamics, static aeroelasticity, and dynamic aeroelasticity. The structural dynamics material emphasizes vibration, the modal representation, and dynamic response. Aeroelastic phenomena discussed include divergence, aileron reversal, airload redistribution, unsteady aerodynamics, flutter, and elastic tailoring. More than one hundred illustrations and tables help clarify the text, while upwards of fifty problems enhance student learning. This text meets the need for an up-to-date treatment of structural dynamics and aeroelasticity for advanced undergraduate or beginning graduate aerospace engineering students.

About the Author:

Dewey H. Hodges is a professor of aerospace engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology. He has been the principal or co-principal investigator for more than 45 externally sponsored research projects in the fields of aeroelasticity, structural mechanics, rotorcraft dynamics, finite element analysis, and computational optimal control. In recent years, his research group has been developing methods for accurate analysis of and stress recovery in composite beams, including helicopter and wind turbine rotor blades, plates and shells. The computer programs VABS (for composite beams) and VAPAS (for composite plates and shells) are in use around the world. He has published four books and more than 190 technical papers in refereed journals. Professor Hodges is a Fellow of the American Helicopter Society, the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and the American Academy of Mechanics. He is on the editorial boards of the Journal of Fluids and Structures, the Journal of Mechanics of Materials and Structures, and Nonlinear Dynamics.

The late G. Alvin Pierce was Professor Emeritus in the School of Aerospace Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology. He was the co-author of Introduction to Structural Dynamics and Aeroelasticity, with Dewey H. Hodges (2002).
