Grade 2-4-- These three informative animal books are well structured for young researchers and browsers. Similar formats include an identification map of natural habitats, a fact and record sheet, and a brief historical overview highlighted by current efforts to preserve the species. Full - color captioned photographs and large, clear texts describe general physical and behavioral characteristics including diet preferences and defense tactics. Specific diagrams of unique features provide close inspection of the sixth digit on the forepaws of the pandas, the retracting claws of the big cats, and the close-footed tracks made by the flatfooted bears. Absent are a few relevant facts. None of the animals is introduced as a mammal--nor does mammal appear in the index. Bears omits mention of the species' excellent sense of smell, and Big Cats omits mention of the cat family's teeth--different from all others in the animal kingdom. These exceptions minimally detract from these appealing nature books which will find a wide audience among young readers. Students who require additional report information should read Zim's The Big Cats (Morrow, 1976; o.p.), Xugi's The Giant Panda (Putnam, 1986), and Patent's The Way of the Grizzly (Clarion, 1987). --Ellen Dibner, East School, Long Beach, N.Y.
