(R)-2,3-butanediol dehydrogenase: Patented by Hiroaki Yamamoto, Keiko Onodera and Yoshiki Tani on October 1, 2001. Abstract: The objective of the present invention is to produce a novel (R)-2,3-butanediol dehydrogenase useful for the production of ketones, alcohols, and particularly optically active vicinal diols. It has been found that Pichia angusta produces novel (R)-2,3-butanediol dehydrogenase that shows the high activity and high stereoselectivity. Further, polynucleotide encoding this (R)-2,3-butanediol dehydrogenase was cloned, and the nucleotide sequence thereof was determined. The expression of the glycerol dehydrogenase was carried out in heterologous microorganisms.

Abstract: The present invention relates to new .alpha.,.beta.-unsaturated ketones of formula I. Thus, 3,6-dichloro-2-methylpyridine is prepared from 1,1-dichloro-2-propanone and acrylonitrile by the formation and further reaction of 4,4-dichloro-5-oxo-hexanenitrile. The intermediates and products are novel compounds useful in the preparation of herbicides and nitrification inhibitors.

Abstract: Prochiral ketones are enantioselectively reduced to chiral secondary alcohols with a compound having the formula I: where, the two R2 groups are identical and are each a substituted or unsubstituted, aryl, alkyl, cycloalkyl or aralkyl group; and R3 is a hydrogen atom or a substituted or unsubstituted, alkyl, aryl, aralkyl or alkoxy group; wherein the substituents on the R2 and R3 groups are substantially non-reactive.

5-ALKYL TETRAMIC ACIDS: Patented by Thomas Meul on September 1, 1989. Abstract: A process for the production of 5-alkyl tetramic acids from 4-alkoxy-3-pyrrolin-2-ones and aldehydes or ketones. By basic catalysis, 5-alkylidene-4-alkoxy-3-pyrrolin-2-ones are first formed, which are converted into the target compounds by cleavage of the alkoxy group and catalytic hydrogenation.
