The chapters of this book were delivered as Preface lectures before the University of Copenhagen in September, 1908, in response to the invitation of the Rector and Faculty of that University. It is not easy to speak dispassionately of the institutions and the civilization of ones own country. The most ardent patriot sees many things that he would improve; the most detached critic feels many things that are surpassingly good. Only the historian of the future can hold the balance even between the strong and the weak aspects of a nations life. My task was less ambitious and less difficult.
