There long has been a thriving market for biographies of Queen Victoria, and with excellent treatments such as Lady Longford's Victoria R.I. (1965. o.p.), one wonders at the continuing hunger for more material on the woman and her long reign. This work, developed from a BBC radio series, justifies its existence through its focus on the queen's personality, as opposed to wider issues, and within those strict limitations it does a reasonable job. Oddly, the source listings ignore many of the better, more recent treatments of Victoria, and a penchant for lengthy quotations gives the book a scissors-and-paste feel at times. Still, interesting reading most suitable for keen Anglophiles or undergraduates.
