From the blurb - "It is a great injustice to the memory of Sir William Hamilton, that he is chiefly remembered as the complacent husband of Nelson's Emma; for, during his 37 years as British Envoy in Naples, he established an international reputation in the world of art and scholarship as a collector of pictures and antique works of art and as a natural historian who was a pioneer in the scientific study of volcanoes. Amongst his friends he numbered such diverse people as Horace Walpole, Dr. Burney, Joseph Banks, Josiah Wedgwood, Joshua Reynolds and William Beckford. Mozart played in his house and Goethe enjoyed his con- versation. He was a pioneer collector of Greek vases and an active patron oi young artists. Hamilton occupied a unique place at the bizarre court of Ferdinand IV and Maria Carolina. His position as a leader of Neapolitan society went unchallenged while his published works increased his fame as an arbiter of taste. His last years were overshadowed by war and revolution and his private life was complicated by the growing infatuation which developed between his second wife and former mistress, Emma Hart, and his best friend and protégé Lord Nelson. Hamilton's role in this strange situation has never previously been examined in any detail. This is the first full-length biography of a sympathetic and attractive figure who had considerable influence on the taste of his day and who lived through some of the most curious and exciting episodes of the late eighteenth century.
