Descrizione libro Hardcover. Condizione: VG. Condizione sovraccoperta: VG. Photos, Art (illustratore). 1st. In the early days of settlement Australia and New Zealand depended on ships for communications, supplies, passenger transport and trade and both countries developed as strong maritime societies. Advances in shipping technology, building techniques and power sources meant that progressive changes in types of vessels occurred. As a result, many of the types disappeared from the seas they sailed, particularly as steam replaced sail. In this book Graeme Andrews records the belated efforts on both sides of the Tasman to protect and preserve their maritime heritage, which was in any case largely a shared one. He has listed the ships and river craft under preservation, others that were possibilities for salvage or restoration and sadly, some that were probably beyond saving. It was thus a valuable reference for work and asperations for histopric ship preservation --- merchant, naval and riverine --- as serious efforts in this cause were getting underway in the mid-1970s. Comparisons to the preserved fleets in both countries today would be interesting. First edition from Reed (Aust) of1976, 136 pages including world listing of preserved sail or steam ships, list Australian and NZ veteran ships, bibliography and index of ships, illustrated throughout with b/w photographs and four full page colour art plates by Ian Hansen. who also prepared the jacket painting of the barque James Craig in heavy seas in the Tasman. The jacket has been closely taped to the blue boards and covered by clear protective plastic. The jacket front flap has been separated and taped to the front pastedown. Apart from light wear to the spine extremities the blue hard covers appear to be in excellent condition. Text block also excellent, no inscriptions. Codice articolo 004858
