Cynthia Joy Hausmann, who translated Father Carl's original letters, is the niece of Father Carl Hausmann, SJ. She has published several other books, notably A Soldier for Napoleon, based on the letters of her great-grandfather Franz Hausmann, a Bavarian who fought in the Napoleonic Wars (London: Greenhill, 1998).
