9780615547954: Inner Vision: The Sculpture of Michael Naranjo

Within the pages of this book is the story of sculptor Michael Naranjo, and if a picture is worth a thousand words, the reader will see he has quite a story to tell. In the 164 images portrayed lies the story of a man who did what he was told he couldn't do: succeed in his career as a sculptor after being blinded by a grenade explosion while serving in the US Army in Vietnam, in 1968. The book reveals the development of a compelling style and the growth of Naranjo's career as an artist - a lifetime of work in bronze. His complete collection of limited edition bronzes, created from 1970 through 2010 are represented here. Scattered throughout the book are short vignettes wherein Naranjo tells stories in his own words touching on many different aspects of his life and his art and the growth of his career to become one of the leading sculptors in America today.

From the Inside Flap:

In the 164 images portrayed lies the story of a man who did what he was told he couldn't do: succeed in his career as a sculptor after being blinded by a grenade explosion while serving in the US Army in Vietnam, in 1968.

About the Author:

As a boy growing up in Taos, NM, Michael always had dreams of becoming a sculptor. However, in 1968, he was left totally blind after a grenade exploded within hand's reach, while he was serving in the US Army in Vietnam.

It was Michael's self-determination which helped him to gather the inner strength to carry on the work he always knew he was meant to do, succeed in his dream to become a sculptor. Each of his pieces are unique, each with a story to tell through its own graceful, subtle movement. The patina he chooses is dark, as that is the way he sees them. Michael's work, being totally created by touch, led him on another journey. After finding that doors were not always opened to him to be able to touch work in many public institutions, Michael began a personal crusade to make sure his work was always accessible to all and began touring his work around the country. Sighted and visually impaired people alike have been delighted to see the words: Please Touch, as they walk through these exhibits. Michael has gone beyond sculpture - he serves as a powerful example of the human spirit and what can be done. Many continue to be inspired not only by his work, but also by all it represents.
