"From beginning to end, Paideia has the quiet passion of conviction, the voice of a poet who knows exactly what he wants to say and how to say it. Behind the range of styles and approaches, one recognizes a single honest and contemporary voice."
--Reginald Maria Huntley
A visceral tour de force, Paideia is an interweaving of the magical realm and human memory. Murphy delineates the collective consciousness--our unspoken nightmares--with deft, daring turns in the imagery that lure and unsettle the readers. A seductive work by a poet of imaginative and linguistic prowess.
~ Nicolette Wong, Editor of Negative Suck
Rich Murphy’s text utilizes pop-culture and historical references with word play that verges on the experimental, but makes clear assertions about our adolescent 21st century cultural condition in an electric use of English. Poking fun at norms and addressing homogenization Murphy’s style offers a unique look at the world around us.
Fjords Review Editor, John Gosslee
Murphy’s interest lies in the interior of lives, in the quiet struggles that shape the human. The import here is his maturity of voice that charms, jests, plays around and sings, as it happens -- a proletarian cross between Peter Pan and Cioran. These poems reflect process (caterpillar to moth as if, as the title of the volume indicates), unnoticed among fiefdoms that hustle by “now-how” and “debt” constructs.
Arpine Konyalian Grenier, author of The Concession Stand: Exaptation at the Margins and Whores from Samarkand
