This volume is an up-to-date survey of the history of Rome. Spanning over 1300 years, the narrative covers the earliest recorded settlement in the eighth century BC through the establishment of the Roman Republic and transition to empire, to Rome's decline in the late-fourth and fifth centuries AD. Throughout the book, political overview is balanced with an analysis of social and economic change, as well as religious and cultural life. The authors present these developments within a critical framework, introducing the reader to the key historical debates and issues of the period.
