Thomas Lęssųe developed an early interest in mushrooms during family outings to pick chanterelles and boletes in his native Denmark. After earning a Ph.D. at the University of Copenhagen (where he now teaches), he worked at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, in London. Among his duties as senior scientific officer was advising the public on edible and poisonous fungi. His field work has taken him to Peru, Ecuador, and Brazil, where he has collected previously undescribed fungi from the depths of the tropical rain forest.

Anna Del Conte is a highly respected writer and an authority on Italian food. She edited the British edition of Marcella Hazan's Classic Italian Cookbook and is the author of several books, including Secrets from an Italian Kitchen, Entertaining all'Italiana, Gastronomy of Italy, and The Classic Food of Northern Italy. In 1994 Anna Del Conte was awarded the prestigious food and wine prize, the Verdicchio d'Oro, in her native Italy.

Gary Lincoff has collected and studied mushrooms throughout the United States. His mushroom identification courses at the New York Botanical Garden, where he has taught since 1976, are extremely popular, and he has written many books and articles on mushroom identification and poisoning. Gary Lincoff is past president of the North American Mycological Association and cofounder of the annual Telluride Mushroom Conference. His principal research interests are the geographical distribution of mushrooms and the belief systems that underlie differing taxonomies of organisms and different species concepts.
