In the sixth novel of the series that has captivated readers around the world, we return to the warm, echoing skies of Gaborone, Botswana, where life for Precious Ramotswe and her friends has recently become very busy.
Precious Ramotswe, that cheerful Botswanan private investigator of “traditional build,” is well-known to millions across the world through the best-selling No.1 Ladies’ Detective Agency series. Those who have been following her exploits in five previously published novels will soon be able to savour the next installment, in which, as usual, circumstances are never as straightforward as they seem and events take a more than unexpected turn.
Precious Ramotswe, is now married to Mr J. L. B. Matekoni, of Tlokweng Road Speedy Motors. The Agency is busy, but Mma Ramotswe cannot ignore the plea which is made to her by a woman who comes to her with a tale of particular misfortune. Unfortunately, her attempts to help are interrupted by a close encounter between her tiny white van and a bicycle, and by a spectacular disagreement between her assistant, Mma Makutsi, and one of the apprentices at the garage. This apprentice has found a fancy girlfriend who drives a large silver Mercedes-Benz. How can he be rescued from his folly? And as for Mma Makutsi, she has found a dancing class, and a man who may not be able to dance very well but who admires her greatly. And all of this happens against a background of quiet sessions of bush tea, and of a land that stretches out forever under mile upon mile of empty sky.
Both entertaining and moving, In the Company of Cheerful Ladies is another masterpiece of comic understatement from Alexander McCall Smith and an affectionate homage to Botswana and its people.

“Like clove oil on a bad tooth, McCall Smith’s fiction acts on cynicism as an effective, old-fashioned balm.”
–The Globe and Mail
“It’s possible the novels of Alexander McCall Smith have been invented as a cunning antidote to the accelerations of modern times. He takes his readers through the literary equivalent of a star gate into a slower world, where the actions of the inhabitants suit the measured pace of his prose. He makes us wait.... Like clove oil on a bad tooth, McCall Smith’s fiction acts on cynicism as an effective, old-fashioned balm.”
–The Globe and Mail
"Beloved Botswana sleuth Precious Ramotswe is back — and better than ever — in this sixth entry in McCall Smith’s best-selling series.... Scotsman McCall Smith, who was born in Zimbabwe, delivers another winner, brimming with poetic descriptions of Botswana, pitch-perfect assessments of human foibles, and sensible resolutions reached over steaming cups of bush tea. By turns laugh-out-loud funny and quietly profound, these life-affirming mysteries are fine company, indeed."
—Booklist, Starred Review
“The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency series is a literary confection of such gossamer deliciousness that one feels it can only be good for one. Fortunately, since texts aren’t cakes, there is no end to the pleasure that may be extracted from these six books....
Brilliant evenhandedness... McCall Smith writes so compellingly of [the characters’] goodness.... Feminist comedy.”
–Janet Malcolm, The New York Times Book Review
“[The] sixth entry in McCall Smith’s consistently delightful series... Amid the hilarious scenarios and quiet revelations are luminous descriptions of Botswana, land of wide-open spaces and endless blue skies. The prolific McCall Smith dispenses tales from the No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency at a rate of one per year (he’s also author of a second detective series featuring Scottish-American moral philosopher Isabel Dalhousie). That’s good news for loyal fans, who eagerly await new adventures with Precious Ramotswe.”
–Publishers Weekly, starred review
Praise for The Full Cupboard of Life (book 5):
“A miracle of gentle wit and perception.”
—Jury, Saga Award for Wit
“Mma Ramotswe, her able assistant Mma Makutsi and her fiancé, Mr. J. L. B. Matekoni, are brilliant creations, keepers of old Botswana traditions yet looking to a new African world. What is remarkable is McCall Smith’s unique voice, with its African rhythms, elegant, formal turns of phrase and subtle humour. Read these books and you have the illusion of a conversation in an understandable but completely foreign language.”
—The Globe and Mail
“Precious Ramotswe is on the case again in this delightful fifth installment in the bestselling No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency series. . . . As readers will appreciate, Mma Ramotswe solves her cases — more questions of character, really, than of criminal behavior — in good time. Traditionally built ladies living in the African heat don’t tend to hurry, and, at the No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency, there’s always time for another cup of tea.”
—Publisher’s Weekly (starred review)
