We all know people who go on vacation and come back with stories not of the major tourist sights, but of some obscure neighborhood or town that was mentioned in a song or of a great spot where their favorite band used to hang. Yet when it comes to travel guides and brochures, rock and other popular music is largely ignored -- which is why it seemed obvious that we should write this book (along with the companion volume Fodor's Rock & Roll Traveler USA). So if going to London means sifting through the record stores of Soho and catching a gig in Camden Town in preference to seeing the Changing of the Guard, then we hope this book is on your wavelength.

Our aim was to provide a good read; something that's as enjoyable while you're kicking back on the sofa as it is useful in your day pack while wandering around the cities. We also set out to provide more than something that just reels through the famous rock landmarks like Abbey Road, the Hacienda, or the Cavern. The stories in here will also take you to the set of railings outside a Manchester police station to which Jimi Hendrix was once handcuffed; the five-star Belfast hotel where the Clash stayed while fans rioted in the street below, and the Scottish airfield that not only witnessed Elvis's only appearance on British soil but was also where Keith Moon had a drunken altercation with a ticket turnstile. We tried to give a nod to the cream of the local bands and highlight the current scene in major cities. While London has undoubtedly a richer rock history and scene than any other place in the world, we also go to the likes of Ian Curtis's Macclesfield, the remote Welsh farmland where Led Zeppelin holed up to write some of their most famous songs, and the stunning County Down coastline where Van Morrison went on a feeding frenzy. We've included many former homes of the stars and other privately owned places (please don't give us a bad name by hanging around too much or inviting yourself in for afternoon tea).

Inevitably we had conflicts of space trying to combine practical information and historical facts about where the great songs were written and where those who wrote them were born, got married, got out of their heads, or even died. There's no way everything can go in (and there are several megabytes of info still lurking in our Macs). Fans of particular genres or artists might complain there's not enough of this or too much of that. Bear in mind that the book is focused on locations. If a band hasn't written about a particular place, or done something of note at specific locations, then they're not going to get as much attention as the Smiths, the Beatles, or Led Zeppelin.
