1926. The horse is not appreciated and never will be appreciated enough, few humans, even them that works him, really know him, but then there's so much to know about him. I've wrote this book on only one horse and when I first started it I was afraid I'd run out of something to write, but I wasn't half thru when I begin to realize I had to do some squeezing to get the things in I wanted, and when I come to the last chapter was when I seen how if I spent my life writing on the horse along and lived to be a hundred I'd only said maybe half of what I feel ought to be said. Smoky is not a fiction horse. Contents: A Range Colt; Smoky Meets the Human; Where the Trails Fork; The End of a Rope; The Bronc Twister Steps Up; The Squeak of Leather; Smoky Shows His Feelings; Smoky Starts Out; Fights for Rights; Amongst the Missing; The Feel of a Strange Hand; When the Good Leaves; A Many-Men Horse; and Dark Clouds, then Tall Grass. Will James was born Joseph Ernest Nephtali Dufault in the province of Quebec on June 6, 1892. He left home as a teenager to live out his dream of becoming a cowboy in the American West. James went on to write and illustrate twenty-four books and numerous magazine articles about horses, cowboying, and the West. His works consistently captured the imagination of the public, earning him the nickname "the Pied Piper of the West." He died in 1942 at the age of fifty.
