For many enthusiasts the romance of the railways was, without doubt, exemplified by the rural branch line - the charm of a small locomotive on a push-pull train running through unspoilt countryside - and the West Country could lay claim to many of the most attractive and most popular branch lines in the country. This popularity is reflected in both the number of model railways that are inspired by West Country branch lines and by the number that have survived, in some form or other, into preservation. While many have long gone, a few have also managed to survive as part of the modern railway network where they continue to form an essential role in the provision of local public transport. Well-known railway writer and photographer Peter Gray has drawn upon his own collection and those of others to provide a colourful survey of the West Country branches during the last decade of steam operation. Some of the lines illustrated are well known - such as those to Ashburton (now preserved) and to Hemyock (closed in the mid-1970s when the milk traffic, upon which the line relied, ceased) - while others, including many of those that were built to serve local industries (in particular china clay), are perhaps less familiar.
