The Square Mile is the heart of the heart of London ? the original walled city built by the Romans around 50 A.D. Encompassing the Tower of London and the River Thames, this small area of just over one square mile is packed with tourist sights and London’s thriving business center. As the most historic part of London yet also the most modern, it embodies a mix of tradition and change: it’s a kingdom with its own many customs, traditions, and pomp and ceremony, preserved for centuries and mixing easily with modern life. Here, Beata Moore’s full-color photos bring to life this thriving financial center dotted with beautiful churches and tranquil green spaces, a place where Roman ruins, medieval timber buildings, and Tudor and Georgian houses sit next to iconic towering skyscrapers.
