The centuries between 1600 BC and 539 BC (the start of the Persian period) were an important and formative time in the history of the ancient Near East. These years saw the domination of Babylonia and parts of Western Iran by the Kassites, the continuing arrival in Iran of Indo-European tribes that included the Medes and the Persians, and the establishment of the Late Assyrian and Neo-Babylonian empires.
Relations between Mesopotamia and Iran during this period were the subject of a seminar at the British Museum in July 1993, held in memory of Vladimir G. Lukonin and sponsored by Raymond and Beverly Sakler. Four distinguished scholars spoke at that seminar, the proceedings of which are published in this volume. Agnes Spyket (formerly of the Musee de Louvre) spoke on Kassite and Middle Elamite sculpture. Professor Dr. Peter Calmeyer of the Deutsches Archaologisches Institute, Berlin, discussed Middle Babylonian art and contemporary Iran. Professor Dr. Louis Vanden Berghe (now sadly deceased) drew on his vast experience of Iranian archaeology to describe excavations in Luristan and relations with Mesopotamia. Finally Dr. Michael Roaf of Oxford University spoke on the history and architecture of Media and Mesopotamia.
This is a companion volume and sequel to Early Mesopotamia and Iran: Contact and Conflict c.3500-1600 BC, the proceedings of a seminar held in 1991. The book is edited with an introduction by Dr. John Curtis, Keeper of Western Asiatic Antiquities at the British Museum.
