9780714838014: Cream: Contemporary Art in Culture (Contemporary Artists Series)

One hundred rising art stars, selected by an international panel of ten leading curators, are presented here. This book offers an insider's view of new art in all media - from painting and sculpture to such new art forms as video, photography, installation, performance and digital media. It offers an informed survey on current tendencies and personalities at the forefront of contemporary art. Numerous examples of each selected artist's work are presented together with a brief curator's text and the artist's exhibition history/bibliography. This virtual exhibition of a new art is accompanied by a virtual conversation on the Internet among the ten curators, highlighting the motivations behind their selection of artists and the questions surrounding art today. The art is also framed within a broader cultural context; "cream" includes a selection of recent texts by ten key contemporary writers who address pressing issues in art and culture at the end of the millennium.

Review:

Cream is oversized, is packaged in a heavy plastic bag, and is the brightest of hot pinks. It is designed to be noticed and everything about it screams cutting edge. Ten curators from different cities each chose ten artists and one text to include in this exhibition in book form. The emphasis is on the artwork, with 400 of the 448 pages devoted to color images. Art world luminaries such as Matthew Barney, Gabriel Orozco, and Douglas Gordon are included, but the focus is on emerging artists from all over the globe. This global perspective is discussed in the transcribed online conversations between the publisher and the curators, including Dan Cameron from the New Museum in New York and Hans Ulrich Obrist from the Musee d'Art de la Ville in Paris. Other topics range from questioning the audience for contemporary art to defining the term "emergent artist." These topics are hotly debated at times due to the vastly different perspectives of the curators.

These varied viewpoints lead to an eclectic collection of artwork, yet there are certain discernible themes: politics, the body, the use of everyday objects, architecture, and design. Though many of these themes have circulated within the art world for some time, much of the work here is new and exciting, and there is brief, helpful text accompanying each artist's work. The writers included are equally as diverse, from Nobel Prize-winning novelist Toni Morrison to cultural critic Edward Said to artist-writer David Robbins. Cream offers many different perspectives and a great chance to get a glimpse of what is brewing in an art world that is less limited by physical boundaries than ever before. --Jennifer Cohen

From Library Journal:

Purporting to be a "portable exhibition in a book" with the aim of bringing contemporary art to wider audiences, this strangely shaped work (8" high by 15" long) was compiled by asking ten prominent curators from Europe and North America to each choose ten "emerging" artists. The book opens with an intriguing but disjointed E-mail symposium by the curators; next come ten short texts mostly on contemporary social issues, which seem rather out of place. The final 400 pages are given to the 100 artists, organized alphabetically. Each is represented by photographs of several works, a curator's introduction, and selected exhibition history and bibliography. The preponderance of sculptural, installation, and video artists make for some rather unsatisfactory representations, a problem further compounded when captions and other text are superimposed on images. Ultimately, the fine original concept for the book as well as the curators' thoughtful work and, most regrettably, the art itself get lost in all the hubbub of layout and design. Recommended only for academic and larger public libraries where there is already an interest in contemporary art.?Eric Bryant, "Library Journal"
