In October 2009 Ellen MacArthur, one of the greatest sportswomen in the world, announced her retirement from competitive sailing. Many were in disbelief. How could the woman who had fought so hard to set so many records give up racing? But Ellen had found an even tougher challenge than sailing solo round the globe.
Now Ellen is ready to write about her incredible last ten years, including the trip which changed her life.
She speaks honestly about the trials of fame after coming second in the Vendee Globe in 2001; about her frustrations in missing the record for the West-East transatlantic crossing by just 75 minutes in 2004; the dramatic capsize and dismasting she experienced prior to her record attempt, and then the ultimate triumph of her spectacular, record-breaking, non-stop solo circumnavigation of the globe in 2004-5, sharing every painful and exciting moment of her 71 days alone at sea.
And of course she tells of the fateful trip to South Georgia in 2005 which caused her to decide to leave competitive sailing behind for ever and focus all her ambition and energy towards a new and much bigger race . . .
Ellen's searingly honest story is a story of triumph over incredible adversity and will inspire others to follow in this remarkable woman's wake.

What difference can one person make to the world? Is it worth following dreams that seem impossible? Or taking on challenges that seem too great?
When Ellen MacArthur set sail on her solo circumnavigation of the globe in 2004 it was the culmination of a lifetime's love for the sea and the fulfilment of an ambitious dream. As a toddler she had begun a love-affair with sailing that would see her save every penny of pocket money to buy her first boat. Aged just nineteen, she was to sail her second boat, Iduna, around the coast of Britain single-handedly. It was the first of many astounding achievements.
She went on to face incredible trials - from towering waves and months alone at sea to the years of uncertainty as she struggled for the support - financially and emotionally - to follow her goals. But nothing would match her next challenge.
In 2009 Ellen gave the shock announcement that she would be turning her back on sailing to focus on raising awareness of the issue of sustainability. How would the century's greatest sportswoman turn her drive and ambition towards the most pressing issue facing humanity?
This is not a book about just sailing: neither is it a simple call to arms. It is story about hope and determination, about family and the ties that bond us and drive us, and how one person can make a difference, no matter how small. Dame Ellen MacArthur may be the first true heroine of the 21st century, but her remarkable story and message is one for us all to be inspired by.
