Descrizione libro London , Kimber, 1988, UK first edition, hard bound in dust jacket, VG/VG- ( dj shows light scuffing on black colored dj), 6 1/2 x 9 1/2, 160 pages, illus, index.-------------------------------------This is the enthralling true life story of the author's escapes from prisons in Italy, Austria and Germany during the last three and a half years of the Second World War. He tells of his experiences inside, and often outside, eleven prisons ranging from the south of Italy to Czechoslovakia on the border with Poland and finally to Colditz in Saxony.-----------------------------------------His partners in his amazing exploits were Alastair Cram, in civilian life an Edinburgh barrister, and the legendary Colonel David Stirling, the founder of the SAS and its military techniques which have achieved spectacular results throughout the world in the post-war years. Hitherto little has been known of his latter war years and the author is the only one in a position to write about him in this remarkable period. David Stirling's ventures and initiatives, so complementary to the author's own, amply illustrate those qualities which led to his fame in the desert, where the Germans called him 'the phantom major', and to the success of the SAS as an exceptionally effective raiding force. The two shared four escapes and life on the run but even more they managed to set up a whole escaping organisation within some of the prisons which attempted to hold them captive. This book, in addition, records for the first time the duo's quite extraordinary achievements in working with the Czech resistance from inside a camp in Moravia and with German dissidents from within Colditz.---------------------------------------------------------------Ma jor Pringle holds the distinction of being one of the very few officers to receive the MC for his escaping efforts during the war. His escape attempts began immediately after capture while fighting against Rommel's Afrika Korps with the 8th Kings Royal Irish Hussars on the heights above the Sidi Rezegh landing ground just south of Tobruk. Another of the officers to be awarded the MC was in fact the author's companion Alastair Cram who served with the Royal Artillery.Commenting on the exploits which are recounted in this memoir, the author explains how there is nothing quite like being on the run, hunted by the enemy, often alone and with the odds always against you.
