Sadly, the humour and vitality in Wain's drawings were not reflected in his life - he lost his fortune and his mind, ending up in a provincial asylum, sketching psychedelic cats that were more fiend-like than feline. Fortunately, his fate was discovered and the Royal Family and the PM joined a national campaign to rescue him. He was moved to a better home and continued to draw until his death in 1939.
