The significance of Natsume Soseki's writing in terms of Japanese literature is massive. Kokoro is a meditation on the changing face of Japanese culture and its attitudes towards honour, friendship, love and death; it also slyly subverts these values. The novel centres on the friendship between the narrator and a man he calls Sensei who is haunted by dark events in his past. As the friendship develops and the narrator grows to know more about the man he so admires, he is increasingly intrigued by this mystery. Sensei, however, refuses to reveal his deepest secret until the truth is finally revealed in tragic circumstances, etching itself on to the narrator's - and the reader's - kokoro, or heart.
