About the book >.>.> As in engineering generally, a suspension is a compromise between conflicting requirements and almost certainly also reflects individual idiosyncracies. I have tried in this book to provide the basic theory, to list the conflicting requirements and to give, where they can be helpful, examples to illustrate the application of that theory, using values which fall within the fairly wide range of car sizes which continue to be made. The compromise is always made easier by being able to put values on the Conflicting requirements and I hope that this book may be able to help in this. The later chapters provide examples of past and present practice in the application of the theory. For illustrations of the applications and assorted information I am greatly indebted to vehicle and component manufacturers. The illustrations are individually acknowledged: it would be more difficult to tag all the items of information with their sources and in some cases it might also be embarrassing.
