She writes, ""in my native Germany we don’t have anything like this, and I wanted to do a children’s book that would introduce European children to this tradition. I decided to write my thesis on the Day of the Dead, and was given a scholarship to study in Bolivia. There, where the old traditions are very much alive, I participated in the celebration of ""Todos Santos"" in a very small village in the Andes.""
