‘I enjoyed it greatly. It’s a very accomplished piece of writing, and it really surprises me that it’s a first novel. I’m sure many readers would love it. The characterization is so vivid, each character has his or her own clear, pungent speaking voice and rhythm. I felt such warmth and tenderness for George and Dorothy, and then as the novel develops even Annemieke becomes sympathetic.
‘It’s quite hard to put into words the special qualities of this novel, although you feel these at once when you begin to read it. Maturity, perhaps, or poise, and a certain distinctive humour.
