Recensione:
‘I enjoyed it greatly. It’s a very accomplished piece of writing, and it really surprises me that it’s a first novel. I’m sure many readers would love it. The characterization is so vivid, each character has his or her own clear, pungent speaking voice and rhythm. I felt such warmth and tenderness for George and Dorothy, and then as the novel develops even Annemieke becomes sympathetic.
‘It’s quite hard to put into words the special qualities of this novel, although you feel these at once when you begin to read it. Maturity, perhaps, or poise, and a certain distinctive humour.
‘I hope that BECOMING STRANGERS will do very well.’
HELEN DUNMORE
Becoming Strangers by Louise Dean
'Louise Dean is biblically prodigal with the sharp sound bite, casually sowing them into her text without waiting to see if they yield a harvest reaction' The Times 14/2/04
'[A] very accomplished first novel...Dean has a deliciously lucid and seemingly effortless writing style, as well as the gift of being able to write about each character from the inside, making their motives and actions clear. She has an unerring ear for dialogue...These talents, combined with a keen take on clothes, mannerisms and surroundings, make this an exceptionally enjoyable book' DAILY MAIL 20/2/04
‘There aren’t many first-time novelists I’d dare to compare to Alan Bennett, but Louise Dean has his wicked yet empathetic eye, his ear for pathos, his almost supernatural talent for observing and measuring the comedy and tragedy of ordinary, heartfelt lives. I still don’t know whether I’d call this supremely complex piece of writing comic, tragic or just plain feel good.’
GUARDIAN 21/02
‘A delicately powerful debut novel’
Sunday Times 18/07
'Stands out as much for the simplicity of her language as for the unsentimental and subtle understrands of love and the structures that make up a life'
OBSERVER 5/12
'Tackling adultery, faith, hope adn death in such a way as to make her debut novel both heartbreaking and thrilling. Dean deserves a huge readership'
THE TIMES 29/01
'This is a graceful, tightly controlled account of the slackening of minds, hearts and bodies. But it also manifests urgent, hopeful attempts at discovering how best to love and live, as death creeps closer'
OBSERVER 23/01
'The deserved winner of the Betty Trask . . . BECOMING STRANGERS is a very affecting tragicomedy that moves from its clever set up to a controlled crescendo'
INDEPENDENT ON SUNDAY 13/2
'Told with wit and subtlety, this debut novel-winner of last year's Betty Trask Award - is a different and memorable love story'
YOU magazine, MAIL ON SUNDAY 6/3
'A wonderful read . . . sad and full of pathos, but funny too' Sophie Kinsella, WATERSTONES BOOKS QUARTERLY
