9780743276115: You Can't Take it with You

Sinossi

In January 2005 Jane and Mike Tomlinson announced that they had reached their GBP1 million charity fund-raising target. In YOU CAN'T TAKE IT WITH YOU, the Tomlinsons explain how they achieved that incredible goal, and why Jane, who has a terminal cancer diagnosis, chose to put her long-suffering body through such difficult experiences. The book takes us from Jane and her brother Luke's cycle ride from John O'Groats to Lands End with Jane stopping twice for chemotherapy en route, on to her incredible ride with Luke from Rome to Leeds and then out to Florida for the full Ironman triathlon. This last challenge is almost inconceivable to the average person involving as it does a 2.5-mile swim, a 112-mile cycle and then a full marathon run. Battling severe pain, Jane completed the course in 15 hours and 48 minutes. This summer Jane cycled from San Francisco to New York, an epic 6,700-kilometre journey that took her to breathtaking altitudes and through searing heat. But Jane's ultimate goals are rather more straight-forward. She would simply like to live long enough to see her daughters and young son grow towards independence and to experience every day to its utmost.

Recensione

‘I may have led England to a World Cup victory, but Jane Tomlinson’s achievements . . . leave me feeling positively humble.
Jane is quite simply an inspiration. There is no other word to describe her. She is truly a great British heroine, even though she’d doubtless be embarrassed by that description. But what else can you say about a woman who has dedicated six years since being diagnosed with terminal cancer to selflessly raising over £1 million for her charity causes.
The series of marathons, triathlons, Ironman events and cycling challenges she has undertaken during that time would prove daunting to the vast majority of professional sportsmen. Her courage and sheer determination beggar belief, and reinforce her message that a terminal cancer prognosis can still involve an active and fruitful life.’

Dalla seconda/terza di copertina

Jane Tomlinson was just twenty-six when she was first diagnosed with breast cancer. A decade later, in 2000, she was told the disease had spread to her bones and she had only months to live. Jane, a devoted mother of three, had to find a way to make the most of every moment that was left to her, and getting her body into peak physical fitness seemed the right place to start. Supported by her husband Mike, she started to run. A 5k led to the London Marathon and far beyond.
By 2004 Jane had set her sights on a 2500-mile Rome to Home cycle ride. Relishing the demands of the hilly route, Jane and her brother Luke set off on their tandem from the Vatican City with a papal blessing in their pannier. But even this challenge couldn't satisfy Jane and she decided to tackle the legendary Florida Full Ironman Triathlon. The race consists of a 2-and-a-half mile swim, a 112-mile cycle and a marathon-length run. Battling constant pain, Jane became the first terminally ill person ever to complete the course. Mike and Jane's latest adventure, in the summer of 2006, is a cycle ride from San Francisco to New York, a gruelling 4,200-mile journey that will take Jane to breathtaking altitudes and through searing heat. The suffering is worth it though; so far the Tomlinsons have raised a staggering £1.2 million for cancer charities.
Not a cancer memoir but the truth about living with dying, You Can't Take It With You picks up from the bestseller The Luxury of Time. Both inspiring and heart-breaking, it's the story of two ordinary people struggling against the hand fate has dealt them.
