Since the War, whole woods have disappeared under the bulldozer and the plough. In their place blanket afforestation has taken place - a shattering intrusion of mass conifer planting. Despite intense public opposition the small but powerful Forestry Lobby exploits the enormous subsidies that the Government continues to pump into upland conifer afforestation.
