9780747255154: Living History

Hillary Clinton's memoir focuses on her eight years at the White House - what she lived through, how she felt about her experiences then and now, why she made the choices she did - in short, a very personal book. She talks about all the political events and highlights and about Bill Clinton's impeachment. She feels it is time to put the record straight on many issues on which she has not been able to speak out. The book covers her principal areas of interest such as the welfare of children, the status of women internationally and social justice. This is a woman whose steely resolve and intelligence proved the bedrock of her husband's presidency and whose courage when he let her down impressed women everywhere. Her determination to succeed in her own right provides a powerful role model.

Recensione:

Over the past couple of weeks, I've spent every spare minute I can with my nose buried in Living History, Hillary Clinton's engrossing account of her life ( Fiona Phillips, Sunday Express)

Hillary's book is engrossing stuff. I found myself liking her and wishing she could stand for presidency next year ( Daily Mail)

The book is at its best when Hillary is rueful or self-satirising ( The Times)

Descrizione libro Headline, London, UK, 2003. Hard Cover. Condizione libro: New. Condizione sovraccoperta: New. First British Edition. Hillary Rodham Clinton is known to hundreds of millions of people around the world. Yet few beyond her close friends and family have ever heard her account of her extraordinary journey. She writes with candor, humor and passion about her upbringing in suburban, middle-class America in the 1950s and her transformation from Goldwater Girl to student activist to controversial First Lady. Living History is her revealing memoir of life through the White House years. It is also her chronicle of living history with Bill Clinton, a thirty-year adventure in love and politics that survives personal betrayal, relentless partisan investigations and constant public scrutiny. Hillary Rodham Clinton came of age during a time of tumultuous social and political change in America. Like many women of her generation, she grew up with choices and opportunities unknown to her mother or grandmother. She charted her own course through unexplored terrain -- responding to the changing times and her own internal compass -- and became an emblem for some and a lightning rod for others. Wife, mother, lawyer, advocate and international icon, she has lived through America's great political wars, from Watergate to Whitewater. The only First Lady to play a major role in shaping domestic legislation, Hillary Rodham Clinton traveled tirelessly around the country to champion health care, expand economic and educational opportunity and promote the needs of children and families, and she crisscrossed the globe on behalf of women's rights, human rights and democracy. She redefined the position of First Lady and helped save the presidency from an unconstitutional, politically motivated impeachment. Intimate, powerful and inspiring, Living History captures the essence of one of the most remarkable women of our time and the challenging process by which she came to define herself and find her own voice -- as a woman and as a formidable figure in American politics. As reviewed by beth l. bechler on November 8, 2003 I bought this book for my birthday as a continuation of my admiration and support for Senator Clinton. I am president of a teachers' union of a small rural community and her writings and life have inspired and motivated me tremendously to "soldier on". I just finished the book and truly can say it was one of the best and most spell-binding accounts of life in the White House and of our political culture of the 90's. Also read Rudy Guilliano's book and in contrast, give living history a "two thumbs up" accolade. Have listened and seen the First Lady in Ann Arbor, MI as she supported the arts around the nation and am enamored by not only her philosophy but her rhetoric. I am also the parent of two sons who are civil minded and productive members of society and her raising of Chelsea has also been a positive role-modeling. Thanks for a refreshing and behind the scenes documentary of life with the Clintons. P.S. I've also visited Hope, ARK, on my way to visit my son in Longview, TX and loved the displays set up in the train depot! As reviewed by Ruth McVeigh on October 5, 2003 A truly absorbing book by a woman I deeply admire on all levels. As a Canadian however, I was brought to attention on the very first page by the statement "The United States had saved the world from fascism." Excuse me, Hillary, but the U.S. did not do that alone. That sent me to the index where there is not one entry under "Canada". There is an admission on page 458 that "America can be quite insular and uninformed about other countries" -- including its biggest trading partner. I could relate with empathy to the marital upheaval and felt that in the context of everything that was happening at the time, the book provided perspective and convinced me she was right in staying with Bill. I couldn't put the book down once I started and felt it provided an excellent overview of the world during that period.
